Supplies for Making Buttons

Today I want to introduce you to the notion that you can make your own unique buttons by using appropriately sized flat objects and simply gluing a button shank to the back.  Here’s what I mean.  This is a button shank. They come in different sizes and are simply glued onto the back of a button that has lost it’s shank to damage.

But they can be glued onto anything really…

So here are some ideas that came to me as I was browsing Team ESST member shops on etsy.com.

  • Cabuchons that are made for jewelry would make great buttons as they have interesting designs on the top and a flat back.

  • Mosaic tiles would probably need to have the edges smoothed and rounded, but wouldn’t they make interesting buttons?

  • And if you really want to make your own designs, try the new resin molds from Japan and glue the shanks to the back of the finished pieces.
