What are Tight Tops?

You’ve seen them–those strange plastic topped buttons with a metal back. No they’re not fabric buttons. More than likely they’re celluloid tight tops. And believe it or not there are button collectors who specialize in collecting them.

Celluloid Tight Top Shank Buttons

Tight tops are made of a solid sheet of celluloid drawn tightly and smoothly over a button frame. Usually, a metal band clamps the celluloid to the back. They come in a variety of styles including 2 and 4 hole sew thru and shank models.
