Kimono Fabrics

May 21st, 2010 · No Comments

I’ll be listing some deconstructed silk kimono fabrics tomorrow and thought I’d share some things that I’ve learned as I carefully took these kimonos apart.
Most of the  traditional textiles of Japan were made primarily for personal attire.  The use as a kimono determined the construction of the weaves and the pattern of the fabric.  The [...]

Vintage Bone Buttons

May 14th, 2010 · No Comments

I’ve listed quite a few bone buttons lately and think they deserve some additional attention. Bone buttons were carved from animal bones for their durability and the material was easily available. Bone buttons will vary slightly in size because they are handmade.
Most of the bone buttons that I find are plain and simple, 2 or [...]

Just yesterday I listed some knitting books with vintage sock patterns from the 40s and 50s.  It seems to me that after that point, store-bought socks became the norm.  Then tube socks entered the picture and took over.  Store-bought socks are cheap and fit most everybody, so why would knitting socks come back into vogue?
So, [...]

Terms Used to Describe Pattern Condition

March 12th, 2010 · No Comments

Today I thought I’d talk about the terms commonly used to describe the condition of used patterns.

Uncut, factory folded. This means that the pattern has never been used and is still folded as the factory folded it. This is the most desirable condition by most collectors and sewing enthusiasts. It’s basically buying a brand new [...]
